Burg Rauhenstein
Ruins, Scenic lookout
Description
Throning on rocky cliffs, Rauhenstein Castle looks down on the rose city of Baden. The ruin from the 12th century is one of the largest castle resorts around Vienna. In the course of its long history, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times. To this day, not only the remains of the wall, but also the 20 metre high tower have survived.
In the Middle Ages, Rauhenstein Castle - with the Rauheneck Castle facing opposite - secured the way from Baden through the Helenental. Today, it is a popular destination for small hikes. Villa Rauhenstein lies at its foot: The magnificent building from the late 19th century was owned for a long time by the Austrian composer Hugo Wiener until it was sold by his widow - cabaret artist and singer Cissy Kraner. Since then, the Villa has housed apartments.
Short hike to Rauhenstein Castle
From the parking lot of the Hotel Sachers in Baden, a beautiful hiking trail leads up to the castle: Via Rauhensteingasse into the Vienna Woods and always uphill on the right, the destination can be reached in about 20 minutes. The ruin is open to the public visit at all times. From the iterable tower, you have a beautiful view - on one hand of the impressive remains of the medieval building, on the other hand of the whole Helenental.
