Teufelstein-Berg
Mountain summit
Description
The Teufelstein mountain and its surroundings are located in the southern Vienna Woods in the market town of Perchtoldsdorf. Its peak is 547 meters high and is located in the fenced-off nature reserve, is forested and not accessible. It is a northern secondary peak of the Föhrenberge mountain range west of the Parapluieberg. The area is named after the Teufelstein rock, a strikingly shaped rock formation. The two parts of the Teufelstein rock are a practice area for rock climbing.
The area around the Teufelstein is part of Vienna's recreational area and is popular with families, hikers and cyclists.
Rest at the Teufelsteinhütte
The Teufelsteinhütte on the Parapluieberg in the Vienna Woods is a small, rustic refuge. It is considered a cozy resting place and stop for all visitors to the area.
Opening hours
Mid-March to the end of June; end of August to the beginning of December.
Hike to the Devil's Stone
The Devil's Stone can be reached via several hiking trails. Walking time varies from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the starting point and walking speed.
Access via Perchtoldsdorf: The starting point of the hike is the terminus of the Vienna streetcar line 60 in Rodaun. The trail leads across the Perchtoldsdorfer Heide and then along the forest road, or along several steeper footpaths, past the Franz-Ferdinand-Schutzhaus on the Parapluieberg, to the Teufelstein. There are about 300 meters of altitude to climb on four kilometers of trail.
Teufelstein-Fischerwiese nature reserve
The "Teufelstein-Fischerwiese" nature reserve has existed at the Teufelstein since 1936.
Originally it was about only 0.98 ha in size. In 2016, the nature reserve was significantly enlarged and now has an area of about 46 hectares: since then, it also includes the area of the former Fischerwiese quarry, including the lake that was created there. Among other things, the nature reserve is part of the Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve and the Föhrenberge Nature Park.
Tip
- for naturalists: the area is home to botanical rarities such as the Carpathian rock flower. Emerald lizards, fire salamanders, eagle owls and alpine bats have also found a home in this habitat worthy of protection.
