Description
Liechtenstein Castle is very different from other Austrian castles and palaces. It is Austria's only ancestral castle of a ruling dynasty.
Built in 1130 by Hugo of Liechtenstein, the castle was owned by Liechtenstein until 1295 and came under a marriage contract outside the family. It was not until 1807 that Prince Johann Josef I von und zu Liechtenstein bought the castle again, which has since been owned by the Princes of Liechtenstein and has been a museum since 1812.
The castle is the ancestral seat of the Princes of Liechtenstein and has a unique architecture including Romanesque and Historicism. The castle is unique in Austria's castle landscape and at the same time bears testimony to the representative will of the Liechtenstein princes of the 19th century. It has been restored to its original state - and you will experience some unexpected surprises during the castle tours.
