Train station Gumpoldskirchen

Train station

Description

The large, picturesquely designed reception building of the station in Gumpoldskirchen is located on the approximately 260 km long line of the Südbahn. Located close to the town centre of the market town of the same name, trains of the S3 and S4 rapid transit lines stop at the station every half hour during the week.

Covered seats on both platforms, which can be reached via an underpass, and the connection to the local bus line complete the offer of the modernly designed, centrally located station in the middle of the wine-growing area of the Thermenregion.

Winegrowing

Already in prehistoric times, the region and thus the village of Gumpoldskirchen are said to have been associated with viticulture. The location on the Thermenlinie and the Pannonian climate favour the growth of certain types of wine and make the region famous far beyond Austria.

Numerous wine taverns in and around Gumpoldskirchen welcome their guests and spoil them with regional wine specialities, seasonal delicacies and an extremely inviting ambience.

Busserl Tunnel

In the course of the construction of the Southern Railway, which was opened in 1841, the first and thus oldest railway tunnel in Austria was built on the route between Gumpoldskirchen and Pfaffstätten.

Even today, there are speculations about the reason for the construction, as there would have been no compelling need for an underpass, at least due to the local environment. On the one hand, there was probably a desire not to destroy the valuable vineyards of the region - according to the Latin inscription, the construction of the tunnel probably served as a reference structure for the still inexperienced civil engineers.

Due to a length of only 165 m and a correspondingly short darkness in the train during the passage (in about 10 seconds at about 60 km/h at that time), it was thought that this time would be just enough for a "Busserl".

Tip: Directly at the station is a nextbike rental station. The bikes are available in Lower Austria from April to mid-November. You can find more information on the website https://www.nextbike.at/en/niederoesterreich/, or in the nextbike app.
