Thermenregion Wienerwald - the origin of the ‘heurigen’ culture

A ‘Heuriger’ is best described as a wine tavern where homegrown wine is served together with traditional food. The ‚heurigen‘ culture belongs to the Thermenregion Wienerwald, just like its wine. In 1380 Duke Albrecht III granted the citizens of Gumpoldskirchen the right to sell the wine they produced. This provided the foundation of the ‘heurigen’ culture that still exists today.

Almost all of these wine taverns are family-run. Primarily regional products are featured and menues vary according to the season. The choice is immense – not only when it comes to the number of taverns, but also their offerings of wines, culinary treats and atmospheres.

The occasions for a heurige visit are manifold. Visits are often combined with a day trip in the region and include a leisurely hike through the vines.

As from 2023, “Thermenregion DAC” can be applied to the region’s red and white wines displaying regional typicity. Discover more.
